As a blogger, you know that it’s often not enough to create mind-blowing content to gain followers.
We all wish that it could be that easy. Write, click publish, and watch your follower count skyrocket.
Well, the good news is that dream is possible, but to do it, you need to do a thing called “Promotion.”
You have to share your blog posts with people to expand your reach and potential subscribers. Share on X
And one of the easiest ways to do that is with social media.
If you’re overwhelmed with all the social media networks and don’t know how to incorporate them into your blog, then you’ve come to the right place!
So let’s go into all the ways you can increase your social shares on your blog! From multiple networks to individual, you’ll see your options and decide what would work best for your WordPress blog.
Some of the links contained in this post are affiliate links. This means that I may receive a commission if you click on the link and make a purchase from the affiliate. I only recommend products and services that I know or trust to be of high quality, whether an affiliate relationship is in place or not.
What’s Your End Goal?
If you’re trying to grow your business, you know how important blogging can contribute to your success.
You want to increase your visibility and reach and blogging is an excellent way to do that.
Because the power lies in leveraging other people’s network.
Let’s say for example, you publish your blog post and share it to 100 people in one of your social networks. If just one person shares it to THEIR network of say 200 people, you’ve now increased your post’s reach to a total of 300 people. And then your growth can keep continuing when anyone else shares it.
When a visitor views your post, the goal is to convert them into a subscriber. Share on X
Because that way you own your list. It isn’t tied to a social media account that you don’t ultimately control and could end at any moment (R.I.P. Vine).
This diagram basically shows how social media can be used to gain subscribers:

2. You share your post on social media
3. People click your blog post link
4. People read your post on your blog
5. People subscribe to your email list
So before you’re ready to share your posts on social media, you need to make sure you have an easy way for visitors to become subscribers.
Here are some common examples of how to get subscribers from your posts:
- Content upgrades
- Popup or slide in boxes
- Noticeable newsletter signup box at bottom or within post
- Main lead magnet
- Locked content
If you’re ready for subscribers, dive in and see all the ways you could use social media to your benefit on your site.
Multiple Social Media Networks
Before we get into each network’s options, the first thing you need to do is have an easy way for readers to share your content across several different platforms.
Luckily, that’s easily doable by adding social icons that when clicked, autopopulate with the post’s featured image and a short description.
It then gets shared to your reader’s social network, and with the hope that more people see it and come back to your blog to read it and then subscribe!
It’s easily done by the installation of a social sharing plugin.
Knowing What You Want
If you’ve never researched a social share plugin, brace yourself, because there are SO MANY PLUGINS out there!
And with numerous options…Paid, free. Horizontal, vertical. Placement on posts, pages. The list goes on and on.
But don’t worry, I’ve got you!
To simplify the process, you’ll need to ask yourself a few questions so you know what you want.
1. You’ll need to decide where you want to display your social icons:
- At the top of posts?
- Bottom of your posts?
- Floating along the side?
Make sure they aren’t JUST at the post’s bottom. That’s because a lot of people never reach the end of the post (I know, you’ve worked so hard! But c’est la vie), so make sure you add the buttons at the top and/or a floating sidebar so they’re always within reach.
2. What style do you want your social media buttons?
Time to put on your design hat and think about the aesthetics of your buttons.
- Square, rounded, circle?
- How big? (Just make sure they are large enough to easily click)
- Gaps between the buttons?
- The standard colors or all in your blog’s color palette?
3. Which social networks do you need?
Most plugins give you over 20 different social networks…so you’ll need to decide which ones make the cut to your lovely blog.
I recommend only choosing 2-4. That’s because studies have shown that the more social icons you display, the fewer people will choose (as it overwhelms them). You can also experiment for a month or two to see if you’re getting engagement on certain platforms over others.
Picking a Plugin
So once you know exactly how you want your social sharing buttons, you’ll have an easier time finding a plugin that does what you want.
You can start by googling “social sharing plugins.” Then look through the descriptions and screenshots to see if it’s a good match. If the rating is high and has been updated fairly recently, go ahead and try it out!
There are several paid options out there, which come with amazing features and are easy to use. Like Warfare Plugins or Monarch.

However, if you can’t afford the premium ones, I’ve listed my favorite free alternatives. These have the popular floating sidebar option and availability to choose what pages or posts it displays on, which is harder to find in a free plugin:
WPUpper Share Buttons (what I use on this site)
I know it took me a few hours of installing, activating, testing, and ultimately uninstalling before I finally found my perfect match.
You’d think the most popular plugins in the Plugin list would actually do what I wanted, and I didn’t think I was asking too much. But no…I had to test my way all the way to the bottom of the list before my “Thank You!! Finally!!” moment happened.
But luckily for you, you can benefit from my work and be on your way in a few minutes.
So check out Sassy Social or WPUpper. They’re great because they allow you to choose what pages you put it on, as there are some pages that need share icons, like you can see on my Worry-Free WordPress Free Course page. Shameless link there, I know…
However, if you require advanced features, you’ll probably want to use a premium plugin like Warfare Plugins or Monarch, but for my needs (and probably most people’s), these plugins are perfectly suitable!
